Campaign Update: 23rd June 2023

Our update on the next stages of our campaign on pay and funding and a to-do list for Reps!

Reballot of Teacher Members

The re-ballot is going well but we need to keep building the turnout.

Members who have not received their ballot paper should email ballotenquiries@neu.org.uk as soon as possible.

Tasks for Reps:

  • Check your Dashboard on regular basis.
  • Look out for updates of your target voters.
  • Hold individual conversations to persuade members to vote.

Support Staff Ballot

Following a very strong turnout in the online ballot, we are now moving to a formal ballot of support staff members.

Ballot papers will be sent to members’ home addresses on Friday 23rd June.

The ballot will ask support staff members whether they are willing to take strike action on the following matters, with a recommendation that members vote YES:

  • Increased funding to avoid redundancies and further detriment to conditions of service;
  • To support the NJC-recognised unions pay claim for RPI+ 2% on a fully-funded basis.

Tasks for Reps:

  • Circulate information about the ballot to support staff members.
  • Include support staff members in any school meeting.
  • Use the Dashboard to check and update data for your school.

July Strike Action

The NEU is calling two further days of national strike action on Wednesday July 5th and Friday July 7th.

The focus of the action is on Gillian Keegan’s refusal to publish the STRB report and talk to teacher unions.

Wednesday 5th July is Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament and the focus will be on a mass demonstration outside Parliament. We will organise local activity on Friday July 7th.

We are aware that 7th July is primary/secondary transition day and we are discussing with heads whether alternative arrangements can be out in place.

Tasks for Reps

  • Make sure colleagues know about the strike dates.
  • Build the best possible attendance for the demonstration on July 5th.
  • Talk to your colleagues and to your headteacher about July 7th and what alternative arrangements can be put in place.
  • Contact us for advice if there are any special events taking place on the strike dates that need discussion.

Our meetings last week were very positive with about 120 parents attending across the six meetings.

Parents have taken postcards to sign to send to Gillian Keegan.

Our Big School Trip is taking place on Monday 26th June – assemble at the Town Hall from 4:30pm

Tasks for Reps

  • Take postcards back for your school for parents to sign
  • Organise a delegation of parents and staff from your school to attend the Big School Trip
